Cruisers rammed on I-75 by juvenile in a stolen vehicle

Corbin / Rockcastle County - The Knox County Sheriff's Department is reporting that: On Saturday September 8, 2018 at approximately 6:04 P.M. a BOLO (Be On The Lookout) was issued out of Middlesboro in regard to a report of two male juveniles that had stolen a vehicle from the KY Juvenile Justice group home.

A short time later Knox County Deputy Hunter Luttrell spotted the vehicle, identified as a 2014 maroon 4 door Ford Fuson, near Sonic on Highway 25E in Corbin. Deputy Luttrell activated his emergency lights for a stop, but the driver refused to pull over.

Knox County Sgt. Carl Frith was monitoring communications concerning the incident in the interest of public safety advised Deputy Luttrell to follow behind the vehicle at a safe distance until other units were able to assist.

Deputy Luttrell continued following the Fuson from Highway 25E onto northbound I-75. At times Luttrel states that the speed of the Fuson reached 90 mph, but due to heavy congestion by several large tractor trailers, the vehicle slowed.

During the incident Knox County Dispatch contacted Rockcastle authorities to assist in apprehending the vehicle. The two individuals came upon a construction zone close to exit 59 and were halted by Rockcastle deputies with a safe rolling stop.

During the end of the incident, the driver, who had just turned 18 years old, rammed the Fuson into the officer's cruisers before finally being stopped. The driver then exited the vehicle and attempted to fight officers, but was quickly subdued. Both males were taken into custody.

The 18 year old has been identified as Zaontae Todd from Middlesboro who was lodged in the Rockcastle County Detention Center charged with theft by unlawful taking over $10,000 but under $1,000,000, wanton endangerment - 1st degree police officer, fleeing or evading police - 1st degree - motor vehicle, criminal mischief - 1st degree, assault 1st degree - police officer, speeding 26mph or greater over the speed limit, resisting arrest, and reckless driving.

The Middlesboro Police Officer investigating the incident, Kenny Vanover, will be charging both individuals with theft by unlawful taking over $10,000.

The other juvenile has been lodged in the Adair County Juvenile Detention Center. His charges are currently unknown and is not being identified.

Also assisting on scene was the Kentucky State Police.
