ATV Crash Victim Airlifted in Laurel County / One Arrest

Laurel County, Ky. (Sept. 28, 2019) - Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff's k-9 deputy Gary Mehler arrested Christopher W. Kirves age 34 of new Harmony, Indiana on Saturday evening September 28, 2019 at approximately 5:47 PM.

The arrest occurred on Hazel Patch Road, approximately 9 miles north of London as Deputy Mehler responded to a dispute and came across an ATV crash on Hazel Patch Road.

Deputy Mehler noted that the passenger of the ATV appeared to have a severe injury to her hand and Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County was summoned to the scene.

The female victim was airlifted by PHI Helicopter to UK Medical Center in Lexington for treatment of serious injuries.

Deputy Mehler then conducted an investigation on the driver of the Polaris ATV and noted that he detected of a very strong odor of alcoholic beverages emitting from him.

Christopher W. Kirves was determined to be under the influence and was charged with:

  • Operating a motor vehicle under the influence – first offense
  • Assault – first-degree
  • Failure of owner to maintain required insurance – first offense
  • No registration plates

This individual was lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center.
