Two arrests at tent located in woods / Laurel County

Needles Tent Suspects

Laurel County, Ky. (November 12, 2019) -  Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff’s Deputy Allen Turner along with Deputy Travis Napier, K-9 Deputy Jake Miller, Deputy Jamie Etherton, and CSO Dustin Saylor arrested two individuals off Highway 552 approximately 8 miles South of London on Monday evening November 11, 2019 at approximately 5:45 PM.

The arrests occurred after deputies were dispatched to a possible trespass complaint at a business there.

Upon arrival at the scene, employees showed deputies a location in the woods where a tent had been set up containing tools and garbage everywhere.

A male subject (later identified as Cody Smith) exited the tent holding a firearm. Upon being disarmed, this individual was found in possession of 10 needles.

A second person ran out of the tent hiding nearby but was located and detained.

The two arrested individuals were identified as:

Cody L. Smith age 29 of London charged with:

  • Criminal trespassing – second-degree
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia

Kayla J. Riggs age 29 of London charged with:

  • Criminal trespassing – second-degree
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia
  • Fleeing or evading police – second-degree – on foot

In addition, Riggs was charged on a Laurel District Court bench warrant of arrest charging:

  • Failure to appear in court regarding child support

These two individuals were lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center.
