Motorists assist in capture of suspect fleeing crash scene in Laurel County

Laurel County, Ky. (November 18, 2019) - Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff's Deputy Joey Robinson arrested Ashley Slunder age 28 of Stanford, KY on Monday morning November 18, 2019 at approximately 7:58 AM. The arrest occurred on I–75 approximately 9 miles north of London after Deputy Robinson was dispatched to a single vehicle traffic crash at the 46 mile marker on northbound I-75.

When Deputy Robinson arrived at the scene, he observed a black colored Volkswagen Jetta crashed up against the concrete barrier wall in the median blocking the driver's door noting that the front driver's wheel was flat.

Deputy Robinson attempted to assist the driver to help her get out of the vehicle when the female driver put the vehicle in gear and drove off.

Deputy Robinson activated his emergency equipment attempting to get the vehicle to stop noting that the vehicle was swerving all over the roadway when it finally stopped approximately 1 mile up the roadway in the middle of the roadway.

Deputy Robinson approached the driver attempting to get her to exit the vehicle however she began yelling and cursing and drove off nearly striking Deputy Robinson. Deputy Robinson then chased the vehicle another mile when the vehicle stopped in the middle of the roadway and Deputy Robinson again attempted to get the driver to exit the vehicle when the driver swung her fists and struck Deputy Robinson in the shoulder and she drove off again and at the 49 mile marker.

With the help of a motorist in a vehicle and a another motorist in a box truck Deputy Robinson was able to box the vehicle in where it could not flee again.

Deputy Robinson had to remove the female driver from the vehicle. The driver struggled with deputies briefly before being taken into custody.

This subject was found in possession of Suboxone and suspected Methamphetamine.

The driver admitted using both earlier. The driver was determined to be under the influence.

Ashley Slunder was charged with:

  • Fleeing or evading police – first-degree – motor vehicle
  • Resisting arrest
  • Two counts of wanton endangerment – second-degree – police officer is victim
  • Menacing
  • Operating a motor vehicle under the influence – first offense
  • Possession of a controlled substance – first-degree – first offense – Methamphetamine
  • Possession of a controlled substance – third-degree
  • Disorderly conduct – second-degree

This individual was lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center.
