FRANKFORT, Ky. (March 31, 2020) – House Bill 284 passed both the House of Representatives and Senate chamber and is has been signed into law.

Derek Lewis 148

The measure, sponsored by Representative Derek Lewis, R- London, will establish a work-for-time credit for working men and women who complete GED, vocational/technical education, or drug treatment programs while on probation. For every forty hours worked, offenders receive credit of one day off their sentence.

“Now that this measure has been signed into law, it will enhance the possibility of individuals remaining out of jail by giving them the necessary tools to succeed,” Lewis said. “This will help criminal justice reform efforts by decreasing congestion in the courts and encouraging past offenders to contribute positively to their communities.”

Under the provisions of HB 284, the program credit will incentivize those who have committed crimes to pursue a path that helps them find an alternative to further criminal activity.
