Owingsville, Ky (April 30, 2020) On April 29, 2020, Kentucky State Police, Post 8 Morehead received a call for assistance from Bath County 911 Center at 5:45 pm. They advised they had received a complaint around 4:25 pm of multiple individuals being swept away in a swollen tributary crossing a low water bridge.
An Amish family consisting of five juveniles and one adult were occupying a buggy being pulled by a horse.
In an attempt to cross the low water bridge, the horse and buggy were swept away in the current. All six of the occupants were also swept away in the current.
The adult was able to make it to the bank, out of the swollen water and called for assistance. Four of the juveniles have been located and pronounced deceased by the Bath County Coroner, Andrew Owens.
Members with several agencies are continuing throughout the night searching for the other juvenile.
Kentucky State Police was assisted on scene by Bath County Sheriff’s Department, Owingsville Police Department, Bath County EMS, Owingsville Fire and Rescue, Salt Lick Fire Department, Olympia Fire Department, Farmers Search and Rescue, Bath County Emergency Management, Morgan County Search and Rescue, Montgomery County Search and Rescue, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Montgomery County Emergency Management, Kentucky National Guard, Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife and Bath County Coroner’s Office.
This incident remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police, Post 8 Morehead.
