SOMERSET, KY - Pulaski County Sheriff Greg Speck reports that on Sunday, August 8, 2021, two people were arrested following the investigation of a two-vehicle injury accident on West Highway 80 in Pulaski County near the Mill Springs Battlefield National Monument.
At 10:51 AM, Deputy Trenton Massey with the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office was dispatched by the Pulaski County 911 Center to the collision.
When Deputy Massey arrived, he contacted a Daniel Brosnan, who was a passenger in one of the cars.
Through his investigation, Deputy Massey determined that Mr. Brosnan appeared to be under the influence of some type of controlled substance.
Additional information revealed that Mr. Brosnan had thrown a backpack over on the other side of the fence at Mill Springs Battlefield. Deputies located the backpack.
Deputy Massey then contacted the driver of the car, Mary Gaines. Ms. Gaines also appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance.
Ms. Gaines told the Deputies that she was the driver of the car at the time of the collision.
Deputies searched the backpack and found approximately 132.7 grams of a white crystal-like substance, suspected to be Methamphetamine. Deputies also located two bags of a white powdery substance, suspected to be Cocaine. One of the bags of the suspected Cocaine was field tested on scene and was positive for Cocaine. There were 24.8 grams of suspected Cocaine.
Several other substances were located inside the bag that will be sent to the Kentucky State Police Laboratory for further analysis.
Also located inside the backpack was a needle and a set of digital scales.
Mr. Brosnan and Ms. Gaines were both placed under arrest.
Ms. Gaines was also found to have an active warrant for her arrest. After the arrest, Ms. Gaines' purse yielded $170.00 in US Currency and a set of digital scales.
Ms. Gaines was transported by EMS to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.
Deputies later located a fully loaded .22 caliber revolver inside the glove box of Ms. Gaines car. The handgun was collected and seized.
Mary N. Gaines, age 39, of Ferguson, Kentucky was charged with:Charge 1: Operating Vehicle with Expired Operators License
Charge 2: Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance (189a.010(1d) - 1st Offense
Charge 3: Trafficking in Controlled Substance, 1st Degree, 1st Off - (Greater than or = 2 Grams Methamphetamine)
Charge 4: Trafficking in Controlled Substance, 1st Degree, 1st Off - (Greater than or = 4 Grams Cocaine)
Charge 5: Possession of Handgun by Convicted Felon
Charge 6: Drug Paraphernalia - Buy/Possession
During the contact with Ms. Gaines, Deputies learned that she had a District Court Bench Warrant out of Russell County for:
- Failure to Appear on a Public Intoxication Controlled Substance charge
- A Drug Paraphernalia Charge
Later that day, the Pulaski County Detention Center contacted Deputy Trent Massey concerning additional contraband they had found on Mary Gaines at the Detention Center.
Deputy Jailer Stacy Lay located a small plastic baggie in Ms. Gaines personal belongings. The baggie contained three and a half white oval shaped pills with the markings "G036" on one side and a score mark on the opposite side.
Deputy Massey with the assistance of 911 learned that the pills were Lortab, a Schedule II Controlled Narcotic.
For taking the drugs into the Detention Center, Deputy Massey cited Ms. Gaines with an additional charge of:
- Promoting Contraband, 1st Degree
Daniel L. Brosnan, age 33, of Somerset, Kentucky was charged with:
Charge 1: Public Intoxication-Controlled Substance (Excludes Alcohol)
Charge 2: Trafficking in a Controlled Substance, 1st Degree, 1st Off - (Greater than or = 2 Grams Methamphetamine)
Charge 3: Trafficking in Controlled Sub, 1st Degree, 1st Off – (Greater than or = 4 Grams Cocaine)
Charge 4: Possession of Handgun by Convicted Felon
Charge 5: Drug Paraphernalia – Buy/Possession
Both Brosnan and Gaines were transported to the Pulaski County Detention Center where they remain lodged as of this press release.
Deputy Massey was assisted by Lieutenant Daryl Kegley, of the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office, Narcotic Division, and Deputies Kyle Edwards, Brett Thomas, and Nathan Meadows.
Also on the scene were the Somerset/Pulaski County EMS and the Nancy Fire Department.
