Fatal Crash header day 600

CALVERT CITY, KY – Troopers with Kentucky State Police, Post 1 are still investigating a multi-vehicle collision that claimed the life of one man. Shortly after 11:00 A.M. Wednesday morning August 25, 2021, Marshall County Dispatch requested the Kentucky State Police respond to a report of an overturned tanker truck that had caught fire.

Troopers and KSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers responded to the scene along with the Post 1 Reconstruction Team.

Initial investigation shows a 2019 Peterbilt semi-tractor trailer was traveling west on Interstate 24, being operated by Gary Johnson, 63 of St. Francisville, Louisiana.

Johnson was traveling in the right lane near the 28 mile marker, where he struck an abandoned vehicle on the side of the roadway. Johnson swerved in the left lane which caused a 2015 Kenworth semi-tractor trailer to travel off the roadway into the median.

Johnson’s vehicle traveled into the median and partially into the eastbound lanes of traffic where it overturned and caught fire. The Kenworth semi-tractor trailer crossed the eastbound lanes of traffic and collided with the tree line on the south side of the roadway.

A 2011 Ford Fiesta, traveling east on Interstate 24, collided with the trucks.

Johnson was pronounced deceased on scene by the Marshall County Coroner.

No other injuries were reported by the other parties involved.

The investigation is ongoing at this time by Trooper Mike Ray
