MULTNOMAH COUNTY, OR - On Wednesday morning, at 3:53 AM, December 20, 2023, Multnomah County sheriff’s deputies responded to a shooting at a home in the 8200 block of SE Cottrell Road in east Multnomah County.
At the property, deputies located an adult male, an adult female and a dog deceased from gunshot wounds.
Deputies began to search the property for additional victims or suspects. To aid in the search of the property, a drone with thermal imaging, operated by the Gresham Police Department, was launched and flown over the area. Deputies instructed the Portland Bureau of Emergency Communications (BOEC) to issue a reverse-911 call to homes near incident address, asking residents to shelter in place.
During their search, deputies did not locate any other people. About an hour and a half after the reverse-911 call was issued, the shelter-in-place order was lifted, as it was believed there was no longer a public safety threat in the vicinity.
The East County Major Crimes Team was activated to perform a criminal investigation. The East County Major Crimes Team consists of detectives from the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), Gresham Police Department, the Port of Portland Police Department, Oregon State Police and the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office.
As the investigation continued in Multnomah County, around 8 a.m., a Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) deputy attempted to stop a white Ford utility van in the area of SE 98th Avenue and SE Minuteman Way in Clackamas for a traffic violation.
The driver did not stop. CCSO deputies briefly pursued the van until it stopped on SE 131st Avenue near SE Comanche Court in Clackamas. Deputies heard what they believed to be a gunshot from inside the van. Members of the Clackamas County Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) responded as deputies believed the driver was armed.
When SWAT team members approached the van, they found the driver inside deceased.
The driver, an adult male, was the only occupant.
It was later determined he was connected to the death investigation on SE Cottrell Rd. In the course of the investigations, MCSO detectives determined those involved knew each other. Names of the deceased will be released after autopsies and next of kin death notifications are completed.
No law enforcement deputies discharged their weapons nor were any deputies injured in either event.
Southeast Cottrell Road was closed between SE Bluff Road and SE Carpenter Lane for several hours.
Both sheriff’s offices are working together as the investigations continue. There is no public safety threat. No further information will be released at this time.

At 3:53 a.m. on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, deputies responded to a disturbance at a home in the 8200 block of SE Cottrell Road, in east Multnomah County. When deputies arrived, they found evidence of a shooting.
Out of an abundance of caution, deputies ordered the Portland Bureau of Emergency Communication (BOEC) to issue a reverse 911 call to homes in the immediate area asking people to shelter in place. When deputies determined there was no longer a public safety threat in the area, the reverse 911 call was lifted, around 6:15 a.m.
No deputies discharged their weapons in the course of the event.
Southeast Cottrell Road is closed indefinitely between SE Carpenter Lane and SE Bluff Road.
The East County Major Crimes Team is on scene to conduct a the shooting investigation. The East County Major Crimes Team consists of detectives from the Sheriff’s Office, Gresham Police Department, the Port of Portland Police Department, Oregon State Police and the District Attorney’s Office.
