SOMERSET, KY - Sheriff Bobby Jones reports the arrest of a Somerset man on December 20, 2023 for Sexual Abuse in the First Degree following an investigation into a sexual assault.
The sexual assault is regarding an incident that involved a child under the age of twelve.
The investigation began on November 28 when detectives with the Sheriff’s Office’s Criminal Investigation Division responded to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital to speak with an alleged victim of sexual assault.
Detectives interviewed the victim along with personnel from the Department for Community Based Services Protection and Permanency Division.
After speaking with the alleged victim, Detective Jay Picard then continued the investigation, obtaining information that Nicholas Murphy, 31, of Burnside, had sexually abused the child.
Based on this, Detective Picard filed for and received an arrest warrant for Murphy charging:
- Sexual Abuse in the First Degree
Nicholas Murphy was initially arrested in Aiken, South Carolina on Thursday, December 7, 2023.
He waived extradition on Tuesday, December 12, and was transported back to Pulaski County on Wednesday, December 20, 2023.
Detective Picard served the Kentucky warrant on Murphy at that time.
Nicholas B. Murphy was charged with:
- SEXUAL ABUSE, 1ST DEGREE, VICTIM U/12 YEARS OF AGE
According to jail records on Wednesday, December 20, 2023 Murphy was booked into the Pulaski County Detention Center at 9:18 PM with his bond listed at $15,000 CASH, however, his court appearance was set for Friday, December 22, 2023 at 9:00 AM but that date has now passed and as of 4:46 AM on Saturday, December 23, 2023, the information on the detention center's webpage doesn't appear to have yet been updated.
