FRANKFORT, KY (December 23, 2024) – Attorney General Russell Coleman announced today the Kentucky Supreme Court upheld the sentence of an Eastern Kentucky man convicted of killing four people, including a pregnant woman and her unborn child. The Attorney General’s Office of the Solicitor General defended the sentence before the Commonwealth’s highest court.
Paul Brock, 44, of Corbin, was arrested in 2018 for the shooting deaths of Mary Jackson, 74, her pregnant granddaughter, Tiffany Myers, 33, and Myers’ husband, Aaron Byers, 45. Another family member escaped the home and called police. Corbin Police found Jackson and Myers shot to death in their home. Days later, the body of Byers was discovered in a shallow grave on Brock’s property.
In 2022, Brock was convicted by a jury but then agreed to a sentence of life without the possibility of parole, to avoid the death penalty. However, he appealed his conviction that same year, arguing several errors from the trial court. The justices of the Kentucky Supreme Court agreed with the Commonwealth’s arguments that Brock should remain behind bars and serve out his sentence.
“This was a horrific and violent crime, and Mr. Brock received a fair and lawful sentence. A criminal who would take four lives, including a mother and her unborn child, has no place in our Commonwealth. Our talented appellate team is ready to make sure these sentences are upheld and these criminals remain behind bars,” said Attorney General Coleman.
Kentucky’s Assistant Solicitor General and Director of Capital Litigation Chris Henry represented the Commonwealth on appeal. Whitley County Commonwealth’s Attorney Ronnie Bowling prosecuted the initial case against Brock.
