Shots Fired complaint leads to Wanton Endangerment arrests in Laurel County

Cawood -  Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff's Detective Kyle Gray along with Deputy Jake Miller and Deputy Robert Reed arrested two brothers at James Cawood’s residence off Winding Blade Road approximately 8 miles north of London on Saturday night September 8, 2018 at approximately 9 PM.

The arrests occurred after deputies responded to a complaint of shots fired there.

The Investigating sheriff’s detective and deputies report that allegedly James Cawood and his brother Charles Boyd Cawood had reportedly been drinking alcoholic beverages at James’s residence when they reportedly had a disagreement and started arguing.

Charles Cawood apparently left the residence traveling to his pickup truck outside, and pulled a .22 caliber rifle and started shooting at James Caywood’s residence.Deputies located a bullet hole in the front window of the residence and a bullet hole in the air conditioner in the living room of the residence.

After those shots were fired, allegedly Charles Cawood got his shotgun and shot at James Cawood in his truck. Deputies located at least two bullet holes and a blown out rear passenger tire in the pickup.

As investigators continued their investigation, Detective Kyle Gray and Deputy Jake Miller returned to the front door of the residence to recontact James Cawood when they heard him rack a shell into a shotgun. Investigators announced several times they were deputies with the Sheriff’s Department and after several commands to drop the weapon from outside, James Cawood exited the residence his hands in the air.

Investigators located a shotgun inside that James Caywood reported to deputies was the same gun he had used to shoot at his brother and was the same gun he had just racked a shell into.

The two brothers arrested were identified as:

James Casper Cawood age 66 of Winding Blade Rd., East Bernstadt charged with wanton endangerment – first-degree; and two counts of wanton endangerment – first-degree – police officer is victim.
