Victim air-lifted following Serious Injury Assault / Laurel County

Investigation results in arrest of the suspect & 3 others

Laurel County, Ky. -  Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Chris Edwards along with Major Chuck Johnson, Sgt. Brett Reeves, Detective Daniel Grigsby, and Deputy Jake Miller and his K-9 “Gotcha” arrested four individuals off Hopkins Cemetery Road approximately 6 miles South of London on Thursday morning February 28, 2019 at approximately 9:20 AM.

The arrests occurred after deputies were dispatched to a complaint from a female subject stating that she had been assaulted and was requesting an ambulance.

When deputies arrived at the scene they located a 33-year-old female victim with trauma to her head and face area. The victim was transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center by medical helicopter for treatment of serious injuries.

Allegedly an argument occurred which escalated into a physical assault where the victim was struck by Michael Ray Cornette. (Victim was reportedly sister in law.)

The suspect along with other individuals had already left the scene but were located by Detective Sgt. Chris Edwards who conducted a traffic stop on a gray colored GMC Sierra and with assistance from other deputies and detectives an investigation was conducted where meth was found along with concealed weapons including brass knuckles, and pistols.

In addition, one occupant of the vehicle had thrown a container out of the vehicle that was located that had crystal methamphetamine inside.

The arrested individuals were identified as:

  • Michael Ray Cornette age 40 of Hopkins Cemetery Rd., Lily charged with assault – first-degree; possession of a controlled substance – first-degree – first offense – methamphetamine.
  • Alex Ricky Lawson age 33 of Elm Street, Rockhold, Ky  charged with possession of a controlled substance – first-degree – first offense – methamphetamine; possession of drug paraphernalia.
  • Shawda Cornette age 41 of Hopkins Cemetery Rd., London charged with carrying a concealed weapon; possession of a controlled substance – first-degree – first offense – methamphetamine.
  • Marcus C. Robinson of Taylor Ridge Rd., London charged with carrying a concealed weapon; possession of a controlled substance – first-degree – first offense – methamphetamine.
  • All four individuals were lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.
