MANCHESTER, KY - August 8, 2019 will be marked as a historic day for Clay County, as the Vice President of the United States of America Mike Pence visited the Manchester Campus of Eastern Kentucky University.
The Vice President delivered remarks about the opioid epidemic that affects the region and the country. A capacity crowd attended the event to hear from Mr. Pence.
The Vice President announced more than $9 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help Kentucky's fight against opioids. This includes $750,000 in training grants for the University of Pikeville, $167,000 for prevention and treatment services at Eastern Kentucky University and $167,000 to Kentucky-based Grace Community Health Center, among others.
Facilities in Whitesburg, Beattyville, Hazard, Prestonsburg and other eastern Kentucky communities will benefit as well.
Accompanying Vice President Pence was Governor Matt Bevin, Congressman Hal Rogers, and Secretary of Health and Human Services, Alex Azar.
The officials praised the work being done in eastern Kentucky in combating drug abuse and increasing opportunities for recovery.
