Arrest during complaint investigation at a business in Laurel County

Laurel County, Ky. (November 2, 20190 - Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff's K-9 Deputy Gary Mehler arrested Imogene W. Cowden age 63 of Lily on Thursday night October 31, 2019 at approximately 8:30 PM.

The arrest occurred at the Dollar General store off US 25 approximately 5 miles South of London after Deputy Mehler was dispatched to a complaint of a female subject who appeared to be under the influence there.

Upon arrival at the scene Deputy Mehler located the suspect in the store who stated to him that "I have done something I shouldn't have”. When asked what she had done she stated she took some stuff that she shouldn't have -it’s in my purse.  The female subject then removed unpaid items from her purse totaling $10.43.

An investigation determined that this subject was under the influence.

Upon arrest, more items were found in her possession which had not been paid for totaling $24.51 including frozen ice cream bars.

In addition, this subject was found in possession of Gabapentin capsules which she stated she did not have a prescription for.

Imogene Cowden was charged with:

  • Theft by unlawful taking – shoplifting under $500
  • Public intoxication – controlled substances
  • Illegal possession of legend drug

This individual was lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center.
