MANCHESTER, KY (November 3, 2019) - Clay County Cooperative Extension Service upcoming programs for November, 2019.
♦ Kentucky hemp growers and processors may apply for a hemp license from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s (KDA) hemp program for 2020 beginning November 15th. For more information about KDA’s hemp research pilot program, go to kyagr.com/hemp.
♦ The USDA Farm Service Agency is taking applications for the Livestock Forage Program (LFP). Clay County, KY went into D3 drought status on Oct. 1, 2019, according to the US Drought Monitor. This triggered implementation of LFP. To be eligible, producers in Clay County must own or lease a farm with a registered Farm Serial Number, owned livestock at least 60 days before October 1st, 2019 and have a 2019 Acreage Report for pasture land on file with the FSA office. Producers can still file a late crop report. However, there is a $46 late file fee per farm. Please contact the Barbourville FSA Service Center for more information at (606) 546-3373, ext. 2.
♦ Attention: BEGINNING FARMERS - Have you been a farmer for 0-9 years and would like to expand your knowledge, capabilities and efficiencies? Sign up for FREE Beginning Farmer Educational Series! Classes will be held one day per month starting in January, in 4 areas of Eastern Kentucky....one being held at the Clay County Extension Office, EXCEL building. Topics include: Business Planning, Resource Development, Crop Management, Harvesting Techniques & Protected Agriculture (High Tunnels+). ♦ Come learn a new embroidery stitch “Couching” on November 4th at 6:00 pm and November 14th at 1:30 pm at the Extension Office. Couching is a method of attaching a thread, plain or decorative, to your fabric. You can make it as plain or jazzy as you want. Supplies will be furnished, but you will want to bring your own medium size embroidery hoop. This is a good way to occupy your time on these cold, winter days! Please call 598-2789 to register. ♦ 4-H Crafty Artist - November 12th from 4:30-5:30 pm at the Clay County Extension Office. Come join us and create your own door hanger for the fall and Christmas season! These items can be used for the home, gifts or entered for the 4-H Project Showcase. FREE & open to all youth ages 9-18. Sponsored by: Save the Children & Clay County Extension Office. ♦ 4-H Teen Club - November 14th at 4:30 pm at the EXCEL Building. FREE & open to all youth in middle and high school.
♦ Comfort Food: Sweet Potatoes & Macaroni & Cheese - November 14th at 6:00 pm at the Extension Office. Come out & enjoy a couple of samples of holiday foods you may serve at home. Amy Combs will be demonstrating a wonderful macaroni & cheese dish and Lora will have sweet potato casserole. Program is free and open to the public, BUT you must call 598-2789 to register so there will be enough food.
♦Cooking by the Calendar will be November 18th at 5:00 pm at the Extension Office. We will be preparing November & December recipes from the calendar. Come enjoy an evening with others that love to prepare food. Recipes are healthy and tasty. Program is free and open to the public, but please call 598-2789 to register.
♦4-H Chefs in Training will be November 21st at 4:30 pm. 4-H’ers will learn how to make a Monte Cristo Grilled Sandwich. FREE & open to all youth ages 8-14. Please call 598-2789 to register by November 18th.
