November 22, 2019 - The Kentucky State Police has received numerous complaints of a SCAM that is targeting individuals that are listed on the Kentucky Sex Offender Registry.
The initial investigations indicate that the scammer identifies himself as a police officer, and informs the registrants that they must immediately pay a fee for a variety of reasons. Victims are being told to load money onto a prepaid card (iTunes, CVS, Google Play, etc.), then provide the card information to the scammer.
KSP would like to remind you that law enforcement officers do not call and ask for payments over the phone. If someone calls to ask or pressure you for a payment with a prepaid or reloadable card, or if you believe it is a scam you can contact your nearest KSP Post, local law enforcement, the Attorney General’s office at 888.432.9257, or visit https://ag.ky.gov/consumer-protection/complaints/Pages/default.aspx .
