LSO Deputy Credited with Saving 3 Month Old Baby in Kentucky - Father Charged with Assault

LONDON, KY - Laurel County Sheriff John Root is reporting that Laurel Sheriff's Detective Taylor McDaniel arrested Christopher Caldwell age 27 of Corbin on Thursday afternoon January 21, 2021 following an investigation into an earlier incident which had occurred on January 18, 2021 at approximately 12:19 PM after deputies and the ambulance service were dispatched to a complaint of a three month old child unresponsive off Monhollen Drive in southern Laurel County.

When deputies arrived at the scene, Deputy Allen Turner began CPR on the baby & is credited with saving the baby.

Upon arrival at the scene, the ambulance service worked with the baby, then transported the baby to Baptist Healthcare where the baby was treated and transferred to UK Medical Center in Lexington where the baby continues to receive treament. Lexington doctors found a brain bleed on the child.

As the investigation continued by Laurel Sheriff's investigators, the father of the 57 day old baby was interviewed and admitted that he shook the baby in an aggressive manner to make the baby stop crying.

Christopher Caldwell was charged with:

  • Assault – First-Degree

This individual was lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center.

Assisting on the investigation and arrest for the Laurel County Sheriff's office were: Laurel County Sheriff John Root, Maj. Chuck Johnson, Sgt. Brett Reeves, Detective Robert Reed, K-9 Deputy Jake Miller, Deputy Jamie Etherton and Deputy Allen Turner.

Laurel Sheriff's Detective Taylor McDaniel is the case officer. Also assisting at the scene was Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County.

Social Services also assisted Sheriff’s investigators on the case.
