Tennessee Man jailed in Laurel County, Kentucky after fleeing Police on Interstate 75 at speeds in excess of 100 MPH

LONDON, KY (September 15, 2021) - Laurel County Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff's Deputy Tommy Houston along with Deputy Justin Taylor and Deputy Landry Collett arrested David Anthony Calfee age 43 of Benton, Tennessee on Tuesday night September 14, 2021 at approximately 11:34 PM.

The arrest occurred on I–75 in London after deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop/investigation on a gray colored Volkswagen Jetta parked on the side of the roadway off West Cumberland Gap Parkway 10 miles South of London.

Deputies noted the vehicle was running and a male subject appeared to be passed out behind the wheel.

Deputies exited their cruiser and attempted to awaken the driver who upon being awakened drove off at a high rate of speed nearly striking Deputy Taylor there.

Deputies activated their emergency equipment following the vehicle as it turned northbound on I–75 weaving in and out of traffic at speeds well over 100 mph for over 10 miles.

Other assisting agencies were contacted and Stop Sticks were deployed just before Exit 41 in London and deputies noted that the suspect vehicle struck the Stop Sticks puncturing the two tires on the driver’s side of the vehicle bringing the vehicle to a stop at the end of the I–75 exit ramp at Exit 41 near KY Highway 80.

An investigation was conducted on the driver who was determined to be under the influence.

David Anthony Calfee was charged with:

  • Wanton endangerment – second-degree – police officer is victim
  • Fleeing or evading police – second-degree – motor vehicle
  • Reckless driving
  • Operating a motor vehicle under the influence – first offense

This individual was lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center.

Also assisting for the Laurel County Sheriff's office was: Deputy Hobie Daugherty, Deputy James Sizemore, and shift Sgt. John Inman.

Other officers with other agencies assisting included: London City Police Officer Joey Robinson and Jacob Bormann, and KSP Trooper Jason McCowan.
