JACKSON COUNTY, OR (December 15, 2021) - The Oregon State Police is reporting that on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at approximately 6:43 PM, OSP Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a two-vehicle crash that occurred on Highway 62 near milepost 15.
The preliminary investigation revealed that an eastbound Chevy Cruise, operated by Whitney Smith (35) of Medford, traveled into the oncoming lane in order to pass an uninvolved vehicle preparing to make a left turn onto Hammel Road. The Chevy Cruise crashed head-on into an oncoming Subaru Legacy, operated by Elyse Hines (35) of Eagle Point.
Hines sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.
Smith was transported to Rogue Regional Medical Center where she later died from her injuries.
Highway 62 was closed for approximately 3.5 hours.
OSP was assisted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and ODOT.
