CADIZ, KY – The Kentucky State Police (KSP) is reporting that Troopers with KSP Post 1, Mayfield are investigating a Wednesday night collision that claimed the life of an Illinois man. Just after 11:00 P.M. CT on April 5, 2023. KSP Trooper Clinkenbeard was on routine patrol when he was flagged down by a witness to a two vehicle collision at approximately the 62 mile marker of I-24.
The initial investigation shows Dariusz J. Kowalewicz, 62 years old of Wheeling, Illinois was traveling eastbound on I-24, operating a 2014 Kenworth commercial motor vehicle, pulling a loaded 2015 box trailer. A 2018 Jeep Wrangler was parked and unoccupied on the shoulder of the roadway.
For reasons still under investigation, Kowalewicz’s vehicle struck the unoccupied Jeep, traveled down an embankment, and came to final rest on its side in a woodline.
Kowalewicz had to be extricated from the vehicle using mechanical means and was transported to an out of state hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
The investigation is ongoing by Trooper Clinkenbeard.
Kentucky State Police, Post 1 was assisted on scene by Trigg County Sheriff’s Office, Trigg County EMS, and Trigg County Rescue Squad.
