LONDON, KY - Laurel County Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff's K-9/shift Sgt. Gary Mehler arrested Dennis J. Smith age 53 of London on Wednesday evening May 10, 2023 at approximately 6:25 PM.
The arrest occurred off Old Way Road, approximately 3 miles east of London following a traffic stop conducted on a blue Mazda6.
As Sgt. Mehler and Deputy Josh Velasco were responding to a dispute complaint in that area when they encountered the blue Mazda approaching from the area of the complaint.
Sgt. Mehler activated his emergency equipment to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, however the vehicle began backing up the hill away from him, failing to stop and continued to back to the top of the hill before stopping.
An investigation was conducted on the driver, identified as Dennis J. Smith age 53 of London, KY and determined to be operating on a DUI suspended license.
Dennis Smith was charged with:
- Driving on a DUI suspended license – first offense
This individual was lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center.
