KSP Post 1 Provides Reminders in Advance of the Anticipated Winter Weather in Kentucky

MAYFIELD, KY (February 18, 2025) – As winter weather approaches, the Kentucky State Police is reporting that KSP Post 1 troopers are helping Kentuckians prepare with important reminders about winter weather highway safety.

KSP asks citizens to refrain from dialing 911 for road and weather conditions. Dialing 911 for road and weather conditions can tie up emergency lines and hinder the response to critical situations. We encourage citizens to use our social media channels, as well as the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet online traffic, roadway and weather portal at goky.ky.gov to access up-to-date information efficiently and allow emergency services to focus on immediate concerns.

KSP Post 1 troopers will begin having abandoned vehicles removed from the shoulders of roadways in advance of the anticipated winter weather. Vehicles left abandoned on the roadways become a traffic hazard when roadway conditions become slick and impede snow plows abilities to clear the roadways.

We ask that as winter weather begins to accumulate on the roadways, motorists avoid travel if possible. If you must travel during inclement weather, ensure you have a winter weather kit including items such as a cellphone charger, blankets, first-aid kit, jumper cables, windshield scraper, collapsible shovel, flashlight with batteries, bottled water and snacks. Give yourself extra time to reach your destination, buckle up, slow down, and keep a good distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. Always completely clear your vehicle of snow and ice before driving and turn your headlights on for better visibility.
