FRANKFORT, Ky. – Twenty-nine hunters have been drawn for a special hunt intended to assist landowners in areas with a history of elk damage problems. Drawn hunters had to reside in one of the seven counties with an Elk Management Unit (EMU).
Each hunter was randomly drawn from the pool of those who applied for the regular quota elk hunts. Hunters can check online at www.fw.ky.gov to see if they were drawn. The two Elk Management Units open for this hunt include Knott County EMU and Stoney Fork EMU.
Nuisance elk complaints are the greatest in these units. Stoney Fork EMU includes sections of Clay, Leslie, Harlan and Bell counties. The Knott County EMU includes sections of Letcher, Knott and Floyd counties.
Hunters may take antlerless elk in either unit. Only private lands are open for this hunt. All public lands within these EMUs are closed to elk hunting.
Unless exempt, drawn hunters must have a hunting license and resident elk permit. Hunters may use any method legal for elk, including modern gun, archery, muzzleloader or crossbow.
