(PIKESVILLE, MD) – Troopers and civilian employees in the Maryland State Police are saluting their criminal justice system partners during National Correctional Officers and Employees Week for their dedicated efforts each day in the state’s jails and prisons.
National Correctional Officers and Employees Week is May 4-10, 2014 and provides an opportunity to highlight the committed men and women who work behind prison bars and walls providing around the clock security, control, and rehabilitation services to Maryland inmates. The thousands of correctional officers and support staff who work in local jails, detention centers, and state prisons, often go unnoticed and unheralded for the important criminal justice work they are involved in.
“The vast majority of citizens cannot begin to fathom the sacrifice and dedication it requires from correctional officers to keep our jails and prisons safe and operational,” Maryland State Police Superintendent Colonel Marcus L. Brown said. “These dedicated men and women and the staff employees who support them assume an awesome responsibility each day for the custody, care, and control of persons confined to correctional services. Their law enforcement partners in the Maryland State Police acknowledge their professionalism and commitment to public safety. We also stand with them in remembering the correctional officers in Maryland and across the nation who have given their lives in the line of duty. Their sacrifice will not be forgotten.”
Members of the Maryland State Police work with correctional officers regularly, exchanging criminal intelligence information or while working criminal investigations. State and county correctional employees are also involved in the collection of DNA samples from certain convicted offenders. Those samples are uploaded to Maryland’s DNA database, coordinated by the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division. The database is used daily to assist in criminal investigations and the identification of persons responsible for crime in Maryland.
