Frankfort, KY— Frank Kros, president of the Upside Down Organization in Baltimore, will keynote at the opening session of the 56th annual conference of the Kentucky Counseling Association at the Crowne Plaza in Louisville Nov. 5-7.
UDO seeks to improve children’s behavior and learning by “expanding the knowledge and transforming the thinking of the adults and organizations” that help children, according to the organization’s mission statement.
Kros has written 25 UDO workshops and made presentations to some 50,000 people. His address, “Impact of Poverty on the Brain,” will present startling research about the effects of poverty and provide interventions to help students overcome early deprivation.
Richard Yep, the chief executive officer of the American Counseling Association, will keynote the General Session. His topic is “How to Reach for the Top When You Think You Might Be at the Bottom.” It will discuss how counselors can be more effective if they know how to take care of themselves.
The Closing Awards Brunch will feature Dr. Gary Patton, an educator, clinician and national consultant. Patton will outline a trajectory of disappointment that may help clients cope with disappointment.
The theme of the conference is “Unity Through Diversity: One Name, One Profession — Counseling.”
The KCA conference offers affordable EILA or CEUs through a variety of pre-conference workshops and a wide range of informational breakout sessions for counselors and others who help students/clients overcome barriers to success in school or in adult life. Focus areas include clinical mental health and private practice, college and career development, counseling ethics and legal issues, military counseling and school counseling.
A large exhibit hall will feature many services and products to supplement counseling programs.
