MULDRAUGH, KY – The Kentucky State Police (KSP) is reporting that KSP Post 4, Elizabethtown responded to a two-vehicle collision in Meade County late Monday night December 4, 2023, that resulted in a fatality.
On December 4, at approximately 11:15 P.M. EST, KSP Post 4 received a call from the Meade County Sheriff’s Office requesting assistance in investigating a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of U.S. 31W and Old Mill Road (KY 1638) in Muldraugh.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Kristian Cottrell, 18, of Guston, was operating a Ford Focus southbound on U,S, 31W when he ran the red light at the Old Mill Road intersection and struck a Ford Econoline van head-on.
At the time of the collision, the van was sitting stationary in the northbound turning lane, attempting to turn left onto Old Mill Road. The van was being operated by Denise Thompson, 52, of Brandenburg.
Cottrell was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Meade County Coroner’s Office. Thompson was flown to the University of Louisville Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Traffic was affected on U.S. 31W for several hours to allow troopers to reconstruct the collision.
KSP Post 4 was assisted at the scene by the Meade County Sheriff’s Office, Meade County EMS, and the Meade County Coroner’s Office.
The collision remains under investigation by reconstructionist Tpr. Kevin Dreisbach.
