MAN WHO FLED BEFORE DUI & METH ARREST IN LAUREL CO., KY LISTED AS JOHN DOE LATER IDENTIFIED AND WAS WANTED ON OUTSTANDING WARRANTS

LONDON, KY - Laurel County Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff's Deputy Bobby Roberts arrested an individual who identified himself as Christopher Collins, age 23, of Corbin on Saturday night July 27, 2024 at approximately 10:54 PM.

The arrest occurred on Echo Valley Road, approximately 8 miles South of London after Deputy Roberts observed a vehicle with no lights on and no license plate.

Deputy Roberts activated his emergency equipment and attempted a traffic stop however the vehicle turned onto a gravel lane traveling to the end of the lane before stopping. The driver exited his vehicle and tossed something underneath a vehicle there.

The driver advised he was there to visit an aunt however occupants at the residence stated they did not know this individual. The driver was determined to be under the influence and was taken into custody.

As the investigation continued Deputy Roberts located suspected methamphetamine and a glass pipe that had been tossed under the parked vehicle.

This individual was charged with:

  • Operating a motor vehicle under the influence – first offense
  • Fleeing or evading police – second-degree – motor vehicle
  • Tampering with physical evidence
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia
  • Possession of a controlled substance – first-degree – first offense – methamphetamine
  • Failure to illuminate headlamps
  • No registration plates

This individual was lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center.

As the investigation continued it was determined that the suspect had given the arresting Deputy false identifying information.

This individual was listed as John Doe and told Deputy Roberts that he refused to identify who he actually was.

Ultimately, this individual finally identified himself and was determined to be James Collins age 23 of Prestige Ln., Corbin, KY.

Along with the original charges, James Collins was charged with:

  • Giving officer false identifying information;
  • Theft of identity without the other consent

Also, Collins was charged on two Whitley County warrants of arrest including:

  • A failure to appear in court warrant
  • A contempt of court warrant

This individual told Deputy Roberts that he misidentified himself because he knew he had outstanding warrants.
