Stolen check-drug arrest near London

Laurel County, KY -  Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Sgt. Larry Parrott along with Deputy Shawn Jackson, Deputy Brandon Broughton, and Constable Chris Webb arrested two individuals on Levi Jackson Mill road in London on Tuesday night June 7, 2016 at approximately 11:29 PM.

The arrests occurred after officers received a complaint from the Dollar General store on East Laurel Rd. that a male and female subject were at the store attempting to cash a possible stolen check there. Store personnel refused to cash the check and the two individuals fled the scene in a yellow Penske van.

Constable Chris Webb located the vehicle and was joined by Sheriff's deputies at the traffic stop and an investigation was conducted. The suspect vehicle had pulled into a private driveway that was not his own during the traffic stop and had ran over a pole and had hung the truck up on the pole.

An investigation was conducted on the driver and it was determined that he was under the influence – this subject admitted to injecting methamphetamine earlier. Officers found a whole book of checks inside the vehicle that are believed to be stolen. In addition, officers found the male subject in possession of a needle and syringe.

Also while being booked into the detention facility, deputy jailers found the male subject in possession of a small baggie of suspected methamphetamine that had allegedly been hidden in the subject's underwear to avoid detection.

The female subject was found in possession of a stolen checkbook that she had hidden in the front of her pants. Officers learned that this subject had attempted to write out a check for $741.87 to pay for merchandise at the Dollar General store and had attempted to forge the names of the victim onto the stolen check. The Dollar store refused to cash the check.

The female subject stated that they had been using meth.

Arrested was the driver of the vehicle-- Melvin Haggard age 35 Campground Rd., Corbin charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence – first offense; reckless driving; forgery second degree; possession of drug paraphernalia; possession of a controlled substance – first-degree – first offense – methamphetamine; tampering with physical evidence; and promoting contraband – first-degree.

Also arrested was: Keresia Botner age 43 of Bill Subdivision Rd., London charged with public intoxication – controlled substances; possession of drug paraphernalia; forgery second degree; and tampering with physical evidence.

The two individuals were lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.
